Reviewer’s name:
Fred De La Cuadra
Identify the text (article, essay, photo, advertisement, video, performance) being analyzed:
Photo
Is there a title?
Yes
Does it appropriately reflect the content of the essay? Explain or make a suggestion:
Yes it does, it may seem like a strange title but it is fitting for the photo discussed.
Write the thesis statement:
His inaction in addressing structural racism along with the events that led to photo-op makes the image incredibly unsettling and divisive for viewers across the political spectrum, notably those of Christian faith.
Does this draft effectively satisfy the definition of rhetorical analysis as set out in the assignment? (An essay that breaks a work of non-fiction into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect—whether to persuade, entertain or inform.) Explain:
Yes it does, I believe it shows how this photo creates a certain effect yet also talks about how context will change the meaning of the photo entirely.
How does your partner discuss the author’s strategies, purposes, and approaches? Reference at least one example that does so effectively and one that needs work:
Works well:
Alex talks about how Trump uses the Bible and a church to appeal to his “Christian Right” supporters, and how it is effective, showing Trump as a leader who is supported by all of Christianity.
Needs work:
The purpose of the photo is discussed but it needs more development of what it means to those that it applies to.
How does your partner discuss the content (what the text is about)? Is it effective? Reference at least one example that does so effectively and one that needs work:
Works well:
Alex talks about what the original message of the photo was and how it was delivered.
Needs work:
I feel as if Alex tried to get into the very specifics of the photo such as the time, and he needs to include these specifics in order to further his explanation.
Is the composition (how the text is constructed) effectively reviewed? Reference at least one example that does so effectively and one that needs work:
Works well:
Alex goes into the specifics of the photo which leads to a good analysis
Needs work:
Alex doesn’t go into the other parts of the photo such as how it was delivered to the media and how it can become biased.
Does the analysis use a chronological or spatial approach to describe the text?
Spatial, he uses what is most recognizable which is the person in the photo, and begins to talk about the details, such as what he is holding and where the photo was taken place.
Identify examples of the following in the analysis:
Logos (logic):
Logic is shown because Alex shows a general example of what is by definition a dictator then explains that this was the leader of our Democratic-Republic government.
Pathos (emotion):
Alex brings about the emotions both sides of the political spectrum might feel from, happiness from seeing their hero, to disgust from such a low man.
Ethos (character):
Alex shows this by showing both sides of the photo, what Trump is appealing to and what others see by knowing the context.
Does the conclusion sufficiently wrap up the analysis by reflecting on the main points of the essay? Explain:
No, I feel as if it should be longer and have more of an explanation.
Does the selected text properly adhere to APA style?
Yes
If not, what needs fixing?
N/A
