Reflection – Collaborative Research Project

For our project, my group decided to write a children’s book pertaining to our topic on COVID-19 vaccines. With the increasing proximity to child vaccinations, we wanted to create literature intended for younger audiences. Not only was this task fun and creative, but it also contributed to the broader scheme of normalizing conversations on vaccination and practicing health guidelines in a child-friendly manner.

Since this was a children’s book, my peers and I had to think carefully on which information to display to children and how to display them. We had to be aware of the linguistic differences between us and children and how to account for these differences in the writing (Course Learning Objective 1). We edited and assessed the dialogue to make sure there weren’t complicated medical jargon and instead there was simple language that children could understand (Course Learning Objective 2). For our plot, we displayed different kids not doing the right thing in terms of health guidelines to serve as examples to the reader on what not to do. This is a common dynamic in children’s books and in addition, we had the main character be the “hero” by correcting his classmates (Course Learning Objective 5).
